How will I be matched to potential mentors?
The primary factors considered in the proposal of potential
matches include
- Availability
- Specific attributes desired in a mentor (e.g. years in the
field, industry experience, positions held)
- Area of interest
- Geographic location
A program coordinator will contact you with suggestions of
mentors who have the best potential for being a match with you, based on your
application. You then contact the people suggested to discuss the possibility
of working together. This initial contact should be thought of as an interview
for both parties. Based on these interviews, you identify the person who seems
to be most well-suited to your needs and formally request them to be your mentor.
If I already know who I want to be my mentor,
can I request them?
You may request a specific mentor; however the potential mentor
has the right to decline the request. The final decision to begin a mentoring
relationship must be mutual.
What can I expect from my mentor?
All MentorNet mentors agree to work confidentially with a mentee.
Mentors share their perspective and experience while supporting skill development
by helping mentees reflect on their own experiences and learn from them. You
can expect your mentor to be reasonably accessible and responsible for fulfilling
their commitments to you.
All aspects of the relationship must be mutually agreed upon.
There are no predefined requirements for mentors in terms of frequency and method
of interaction with mentees. In addition, mentors are not expected to act as
consultants - to share proprietary information, methodologies or technologies
that are core to their own practices.
What is expected of me?
As a mentee, you are expected to respect the policies of the
MentorNet program as well as the agreement reached between you and your mentor.
In addition, mentees may be contacted periodically by MentorNet coordinators
to solicit feedback about their experience with the program. These inquiries
will be focused on confirming the current status of the mentoring relationship
as well as improving the program. Mentees will not be asked to disclose confidential
information.
How long does the relationship last?
The mentoring relationship may span a few discussions or blossom
into a long-standing arrangement that lasts for years. The nature and progression
of the relationship is a matter of agreement between the mentor and mentee.
How do I get started?
Complete the MentorNet application on-line
or call the Office (215-665-8151) to receive a paper application. When
the MentorNet coordinators receive your completed application, you will
be sent
an information packet and be contacted to set up a time to talk with you in
person.
