Meeting Summary

Tuesday November 26 – Strategic Inquiry:  How Questions can transform Individuals, Groups, and Organizations with Dr. Marilee Goldberg-Adams and Dr. Andrea Zintz

The week of Thanksgiving an eager audience spent time with  Marilee Goldberg-Adams and Andrea Zintz learning about their experiences using Strategic Inquiry to transform individuals, groups and individuals.  We experienced something that Dr. Goldberg-Adams has continued to discover as she delves deeper into this work: the concept, which seems so simple, contains subtleties that enrich the discussion and outcome. The theory, grounded in positive methodologies like those of Martin Seligman and Carl Rogers, focuses on how the stance the questioner takes can influence the experience of seeking information.

The two stances are both present in our repertoire of normal human reactions, and choosing one over the other can make a real difference in the outcome.  The two stances are the mindset of Judger and that of Learner.

Questions asked from the Learner stance have the intent and purpose of engaging on the level of human spirit bring a different focus they: inquire, are thoughtful, accept in an unbiased way, are like those of an inquisitive researcher, are flexible and adaptive, have an inclusive point of view, are built on win-win relationships, encourage dialogue, result in feedback being seen as helpful and operate in a resolution and innovation-seeking mode.

On the other hand, questions asked from a judger stance have the more common problem solving focus and can more easily move to finding blame, discover only the known outcomes and shift into debate and advocate dynamics resulting in win-lose outcomes.

The equation our presenters used:

 Q -> D ->A->RR  cycles to read

Question – leads to Decision – leads to Action – Leads to Action – leads to Results – leads to reflection which leads back to Question.

This equation and a series of other tools helped create a unique culture within the Johnson & Johnson family of companies as a leadership team which included Dr. Zintz and her external collaborator Dr. Goldberg-Adams helped create a sustainable culture of open and curious questioning.  The only disappointment of the day was that we all wanted to learn more about the tools, methods and stories that created a different way for a corporate environment to be.

December 12, 2002 – “99 Seconds” Presentations and Holiday Gathering with Sister Organizations. PCOM (City Line Avenue) Philadelphia 5:30  – 9:00

Join us on December 12 for a fun-filled evening as either a participant or an observer. The Philadelphia chapters of ODN and ASTD are joining together for a night of networking, fun and frolic! This is the opportunity to bring out your very best, most comical, often poetic, and sometimes philosophical thoughts of you, our talented memberships, whose ingenuity will be challenged by one unwavering rule: talk about whatever you want, but do it in 99 seconds!

This workshop - White People Confronting Racism - is part of a long-term learning process for all OD practitioners. Parallel to the white people workshops, people of color will look at how racism has affected them. In addition, joint sessions will be set up for cross-race dialog. The majority of PRODN members who are people of color have encouraged us to hold this workshop and have provided input to the content.

What will I learn if I attend the workshop?
This workshop differs from traditional diversity offerings in that we will learn about racism from the perspective of our whiteness - to understand what it means to be white in a society where whites and white culture predominate.

February 3-4 2003 White People Confronting Racism Part 2 9:00 – 6:00  Leaders - Antje Mattheus and Lorraine Marino  PCOM (City Line Avenue) Phone (610) 526-1100

Whites Confronting Racism, part 2, is the second in a series of three workshops for European Americans – whites – wanting to continue their learning about racism and build skills in addressing it.  This workshop continues the dialogue from the conversations that were started in the Level 1 workshop of this series.
