CHAIR’S MESSAGE

Dear PRODN Members:

The 2002-2003 Steering Committee has been working hard to prepare for the upcoming program year.  I am so pleased to be collaborating with such a talented group of individuals, and excited in anticipation of the coming year’s monthly programs and learning events.

Our goal as a Steering Committee is to be THE premier educational resource for organization development practitioners in the Philadelphia Region.  As such, our objectives are to:

The Steering Committee is pursuing a number of strategies to accomplish our objectives.  First, you will find attached a survey that we are asking you to complete.  We will use your responses to book programs and events that reflect your professional development requests.  Within the current economic and political environment we want to make sure that your development dollars are earning you the greatest returns.

Second, we are committed to building upon the work of former Steering Committee members, and our membership at large, to support PRODN in its emergence as a more diverse organization.  If we fail to achieve this goal, I believe that we as a professional organization will lack the insight, talent, and fortitude necessary to survive.  We are in the process of establishing relationships with sister organizations, like the National Association of African-Americans in Human Resources of Philadelphia, and utilizing alliances with people of color to energize and inform our direction.

Third, we are focusing our energies to strengthen what we have to offer newer practitioners to the OD field.  Our goal is to fortify our mentoring program, continue to support our New Practitioner’s Special Interest Group, and create alliances with regional OD programs, like the Masters program at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM).  In fact, I am delighted to report that PCOM will be supporting PRODN by providing space for our monthly meetings and learning events this program year.

Finally, big change has happened behind PRODN’s technology scene.  After many, many  generous hours of technical support, Warren Hoffman has stepped down as PRODN’s technology guru.  While we have recently contracted with an exceptional vendor, tremendous thanks go out to Warren for his tremendous commitment.  Thank you Warren!

Kim Eberbach

Chair, PRODN

Tuesday September 24, 2002 - Social Dreaming with Tom Michael PhD

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine – City Line Avenue) -- 5:30 - 9:00

Social dreaming is an innovative way of working with dreams that moves beyond the traditional focus on interpreting their meaning. Instead, dreams and their associations are examined to uncover the social meaning for the group or organization. Tom Michael, Ph.D. will lead us in a conversation of our own dreams.

By working with a "matrix" created as a result of the conversation in our group, we will collectively explore themes and meanings that surface for us in addition to the business application with social dreaming. Additionally, there will be opportunities for participants to work in small groups to explore application of the insights that emerge during the evening.

SPECIAL MONTHLY MEETING

Tuesday October 29, 2002 –The Cornell Interactive Theater Ensemble

Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (City Line Avenue Philadelphia)

5:00 – 9:00 Price for this event is $25.00 to cover group expenses.

The Philadelphia Region Organizational Development Network Presents...

with
The Cornell Interactive Theater Ensemble

We are fortunate to have The Cornell Interactive Theatre Ensemble (CITE) join us for an evening of dialogue and exploration about sensitive workplace issues. Using carefully scripted scenarios as the trigger, and a safe and open forum, we will engage in conversations to work through our reactions, perspectives and stereotypes to gain a greater appreciation of the underlying motivations and subtleties of misunderstanding that can escalate into intense conflict.

This group of professional actors and facilitators, formed in 1992, has worked extensively with business, academic and government clients across the country.

Tuesday November 26 – Strategic Inquiry:  How Questions can transform Individuals, Groups, and Organizations with Dr. Marilee Goldberg-Adams and Dr. Andrea Zintz Location TBD: 5:30 – 8:30

Strategic Inquiry provides the foundation for thinking and communicating. It has strong application for leadership, strategic creativity, effective teams, productivity, and for shaping and achieving desired outcomes both individually and for organizations.

Through a combination of presentation, discussion and interactive exercises, Dr. Marilee Goldberg-Adams and Dr. Andrea Zintz will assist us in developing our own "strategic inquiry" techniques. Come away from the evening with the ability to ask better questions so that your clients get better results!

SIG MEETINGS

September 12, Thursday (6:00pm) – Learning Group SIG

The mission of the Learning Group is to learn and support each other in facilitating organizational change. We try to integrate the message of the books we read through discussion and implementation in our lives. We are committed to the Learning Group Rules of Trust.

§         What is said here stays here.

§         Accept each person - where they are and support each other's growth.

§         Be prepared.

§         Have a sense of humor - laugh at ourselves.

We meet at the homes of the members, approximately once a month, in the evening from 6:30 to 9:00 as decided by the members, and all contribute to the meal. We share a meal, then discuss the previously agreed on reading.

Next Meeting. The book we have decided on is:
Lessons from the Field, Applying Appreciative Inquiry
Sue Annis Hammond and Cathy Royal, eds. (Please read pages 1-48)
Published by Thin Book Publishing ISBN: 0966537335.

How to join us

September 17, Tuesday  (6:00pm) - New Practitioners Group SIG

We welcome new and experienced practitioners to our first meeting this fall.

The concept of presence is one of the cornerstones of the Gestalt Model. It deals with the stance that we each take - often without being aware of it - when attempting to influence others. Our presence is a function of strongly held beliefs and assumptions about teaching, learning, and exerting influence. To this we add our personal "style" - the unique way in which we contact other people. Every one of us has presence, but there are many different ways in which it is manifested.

In this workshop, we will look at some basic definitions and examples of presence, and we will look at the assumptions that form our particular way of taking a stance. We will look at the use of evocative and provocative modes of exerting influence, and apply this to our own cases. Attention will also be devoted to use of self in dealing with resistance.

This workshop - White People Confronting Racism - is part of a long-term learning process for all OD practitioners. Parallel to the white people workshops, people of color will look at how racism has affected them. In addition, joint sessions will be set up for cross-race dialog. The majority of PRODN members who are people of color have encouraged us to hold this workshop and have provided input to the content.

 Who should attend this workshop?
Consultants, trainers and leaders of European-American descent -- white people -- who want to strengthen their self awareness and ability to address racism and racial issues -- at the level of individual, group, and systems. It is also intended for whites who want to learn to become better allies with other whites and people of color to work toward a non-racist society. Also encouraged to come are consultants who might think they've already "been there, done that" with diversity or feel frustrated by previous experiences in diversity programs. We are our best instruments: the more we do our own work, the better we are able to support our clients.

What will I learn if I attend the workshop?
This workshop differs from traditional diversity offerings in that we will learn about racism from the perspective of our whiteness - to understand what it means to be white in a society where whites and white culture predominate.

Rotating Membership

This year PRODN is switching our membership dues from a calendar year (with occasional rate reductions at the end of the year) to a rotating membership calendar.  This means that if you register as a new member or renew your membership, that your membership will be “up for renewal” a year from that date.

Current members who have already paid for a calendar year, your renewal will become effective January 1, 2003 so as not to reduce the value of your membership.

Early Bird Reduction Renew before September 31, 2002 at $80 per year. New and renewing members after September 31, dues are $100 per year. (Still a bargain –attend 5 meetings and all the other services are free!)

Seeking Membership Chair and Committee Members

What better way to really find the value in your organization and add an important component to your resume, than to become involved?  The board is looking for individuals interested in growing and serving our membership.  You are invited to contact Board President, Kim Eberbach by phone 717-335-2461 or email keberbach@onemain.com to learn more about this opportunity.
