Gestalt Coaching: Consideration of the Theory of Gestalt Therapy & Coaching

Presented by PRODN members Debra Brosan and Mark Magerman

PRODN's Debra Brosan and her husband Mark Magerman will conduct an experiential program on Gestalt Coaching. Gestalt is a "here and now" methodology. In other words, what is happening right here, right now is of the essence. Past experiences play out in the present moment. For example, at each moment, the background of our lives (history) is present within us. Therefore, how we respond to stimuli is in some way related to our past experiences. This workshop will consist of an explanation of theory, followed by an invitation to *work*. This means that we will demonstrate coaching using a Gestalt orientation with anyone that wants to work in front of the group. This experience is followed by a group debrief where we will invite questions on the theory and practice of Gestalt Coaching.

The Theory of Gestalt therapy is based on some of the following:

a.. A whole systems approach
b.. Field Theory
c.. Multiple levels of systems
d.. The paradoxical theory of change
e.. Interrelatedness

And is

a.. Process oriented
b.. Dialogical
c.. Humanistic
d.. Phenomenological

Why is the Theory of Gestalt Therapy a natural fit for a coaching process?
  • Person-centered
  • Person solves own problems
  • Awareness of unfinished business
  • Awareness of what gets in your way
  • Looking at a whole system (an organization, a team, a workgroup, a family,etc.)

You'll hear us use the term "use of self"; for paying attention to one's own experience (sensations, feelings, thoughts) is an important skill and essential to effective coaching.
