with Barry Oshry of Power and Systems, Inc.
Tuesday, June 3, 2003

(Optional: 1 Day Train the Trainer Certification following the 1 day Workshop)

There is probably no more significant set of issues facing us in our organizations, communities and the world today than the challenges raised by the coming together of differing cultures.

This process of merging cultures – whether stemming from the merger of organizations or from two business units needing to interact with one another or from the entry of increasingly diverse populations into the workplace or from organizational expansion to multiple countries – inevitably disrupts the status quo. Feelings and reactions are generated on all sides that regularly heighten interpersonal tensions and diminish overall organizational effectiveness.

This learning event offers you the opportunity to take advantage of attending the “Merging Cultures” workshop and then have the option to obtain certification in to deliver the workshop.

Do not miss this opportunity to experience/become certified by the creators of the Organization Workshop in this latest and very timely learning event!

What is the Workshop About? The Merging Cultures Workshop addresses the productive possibilities and the pitfalls in the merger process.
This workshop explores the central role dominance plays in this process. The dominant culture is “the way it has always been” in the workplace. The dominant culture has its “rules” – generally unaware and unspoken – regarding what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior, speech, dress, emotionality, values, and more. And into this culture come the “others” with their own “rules”. When we don’t see or understand these differing cultures and their rules, we inadvertently push “hot buttons” that trigger misunderstanding, conflict, and stereotyping, all of which derail the goals of working together.
Who Should Attend?
  • Internal and external practitioners who are involved with working change issues across cross-cultures
  • Human Resource managers
  • Business Line Managers
Why Should You Attend?

This workshop helps members of differing cultures deepen their understanding of and master the process of coming together so that they are able to develop a single, unified, high energy organization. It generates the knowledge and skills necessary to make the merger process successful, creative and enriching.

You will learn how to:·

  • Clarify the role dominance plays when two cultures come together
  • Identify “hot button” issues that trigger misunderstanding across cultural lines
  • Apply a road map for creating a single robust human system in which cultural differences add to the creative energy of the system
What’s the Format? The workshop is a blend of experiential activities and debriefing, strategic frameworks, and application. A dynamic simulation gets to the heart of issues faced by both Dominants and Others as these two cultures meet in the workplace.
Why Should You Get Certified?

Those who have been certified in other Oshry programs can attest to the thoroughness and power of the content, design, and materials.

By getting certified, you will:

  • Be qualified for licensing by Power and Systems, Inc. to deliver this proprietary workshop.
  • Develop the knowledge and skills necessary to deliver the Merging Culture workshop
  • Receive reproducible material for conducting the Merging Cultures workshop
Who is Barry Oshry?

Barry Oshry has been creating and delivering insightful, powerful, down-to-earth learning opportunities for 4 decades. He began his work in the 1960s at Boston University where he developed large-scale organizational simulations for undergraduates in business. Throughout the 1960s, Oshry continued his research at BU and at NTL Institute's Management Work Conferences and Community Laboratories. In 1970 he created the Power & Leadership Conference (Power Lab) and since the mid-1970s he has developed and conducted organizational simulations with Tops, Middles, Bottoms and Customers that have been used to create "system sight" for organizations and institutions throughout the world. Oshry is a recipient of the David L. Bradford Educator Award.

His workshops are characterized by:

  • A human systems approach that fundamentally transforms the way we view the many social systems of our lives.
  • Learning processes that move people from the destructive consequences of system blindness to system awareness, empowered personal change, and constructive systems change.
  • High involvement experiences, producing visceral learning that sticks.
  • Dealing with the reality of organizations as people experience it, having practical payoffs for personal and organizational effectiveness. Not "pie in the sky."
  • A focus on working together in partnership across boundaries.
  • A perspective that challenges us to attain our higher-order possibilities as people and organizations.
  • Opportunity within the workshop to begin action planning that applies what you have learned.
